In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, HEARTH joins millions in celebrating the strength, liveliness, and perseverance of our Hispanic and Latino brothers and sisters.

National Hispanic Heritage Month, which occurs annually from September 15 to October 15, honors the culture and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans. A Little Retail Therapy For Our Hardworking Moms
New life, New Look Closet Volunteers continue to oversee HEARTH’s on-site clothing pantry, providing fabulous clothing for both mom and her children.
Last month, they helped organize a special night for HEARTH moms with long-time partner Treasure House Fashions.
HEARTH moms had a blast and walked out with shopping bags filled with everything from interview essentials to causal items, and warm winter coats.
HEARTH Stories of Change
We’ve been providing housing for moms in need for over 26 years. Here we’ll share the stories of women who have found success and security at HEARTH.
While living with her 1-year-old son and 5-year-old-daughter, a horrible house fire caused Samantha to lose everything. She lived with her mom for a short time, but she learned that it wasn’t a healthy environment for her and her children.
In realizing, she needed additional supportive services, Samantha sought help from the Salvation Army shelter before finding HEARTH.
At HEARTH, Samantha enrolled her son into the Early Head Start program, which was difficult at first because she had never left him in the care of others. With the help of HEARTH staff, she made it through the transition period. Her son loves the Early Head Start program, and Samantha is thrilled to see him thriving and learning.
Her daughter is seeking therapy from Crisis Center North to help work through some of the trauma of transition she has experienced.
With her children’s needs being met, Samantha was then able to focus on achieving her goals. She has been working hard with Pittsburgh Financial Empower Center to repair her credit and learn new money management strategies.
During the pandemic, she met virtually with one of HEARTH’s volunteer tutors twice a week to study for her GED exam. Since starting tutoring, Samantha’s confidence has skyrocketed. She even noted, “Everything is going very well! Thanks to the staff of HEARTH for the help, but especially to Mrs. Maryellen for her support and patience with me.”
