Every Superhero Needs A Sidekick

Melissa and her two children set foot in Pittsburgh by way of a neighboring state. After being displaced by domestic violence, she found herself in an unimaginable situation. Melissa was unemployed and without income. Thanks to an area church, she stayed in a local hotel for a month. Despite her circumstances and all the challenges she faced, Melissa was determined to persevere, which is how she found her way to HEARTH. Our program specializes in providing the help individuals need to be their best for their families, and Melissa was determined to build a better life. HEARTH became her sidekick on her family’s journey to wholeness and wellness.

A new home means a new start; Melissa moved into our facilities and deemed them her new headquarters this past summer. Like all HEARTH participants, she was provided a fully-stocked apartment with a range of supportive services to help her take the guesswork out of where her family’s basic needs would come from and fight barriers that awaited in the outside world.

Knowing the fate of her children’s future depended on her actions, Melissa tended to her little superheroes. Both attended counseling provided by our partner Crisis Center North to cope with their past trauma and achieve mental and emotional wellness. They even picked out new super suits and other clothing attire from HEARTH’s clothing closet.

Raising a family today requires more time, energy, and resources than ever before. However, Melissa continues to tap into her inner strength so that her family can thrive —emotionally, physically, and financially. Since joining the HEARTH community, Melissa has enrolled in school full-time and plans to achieve full-time employment with her newfound skills. Stay tuned to see how Melissa triumphs in the end, and visit our website for more HEARTH superhero stories.

Individuals like you have come to HEARTH’s rescue and saved the day for those we serve. We call on you again this holiday season. With your help, we can eradicate homelessness and bring up a new generation of healthy, educated, and inspired superheroes. Please consider a gift in support of HEARTH.
